We had arranged our New Year gathering at the beginning of
December and it was decided that Marianne and Martins turn to be host!
Linda and I had been home and visiting friends and relations
the length and breadth of the UK and Northern Ireland over the Christmas and
New Year. I had on our travels collected a wide variety of cheeses and these
along with various crackers, biscuits and breads would be our part in the meal.
So the Starter was to be Carolyn’s smoked fish
Followed by Marianne’s take on Nigella Lawson’s Tagine
Then came Kalles Dessert, an Orange ice-cream, in a homemade
waffle and accompanied by preserved Kumquats in syrup.
Then was our turn with the 13 Cheeses, chutneys, relishes,
marmalades, crackers, pickle’s etc.
We gathered at 18:00 (well some of us did, Kalle having been
so kind and picked up Carolyn and needed to drop his car off.)
We started off with a nice Sekt!
Then came Carolyn’s fish dish “Smokie”, it would normally be
made with smoked haddock, but this being one fish that they don’t seem to smoke
in Germany (though they smoke just about everything else) she used smoked
Halibut. It was a very nice tasty starter of a smoked fish, in a cream sauce,
baked in the oven with tomatoes and grated cheese.
The main course was Marianne’s take on a Nigella Lawson take
on a traditional Moroccan dish.
It turned out very nice and Marianne served a cous-cous with
pomegranate seeds and sliced red onions, chopped coriander and again
pomegranate seeds.
Then along came the dessert, this was Kalle’s home-made
orange ice-cream in a home-made waffle and some of his wonderful Kumquats in
syrup.
Then we presented our cheese board, it was a fine selection
of British made cheeses, we had a nice Taylor’s port to accompany them. We had
a also decided to have a little quiz, we numbered the cheeses and then told
them a little about each one and they then had to put the name to the number.
It was all a nice bit of fun.
What with the present unpacking,
the eating,
drinking
and some kissing!
And the embarrassed denial
